Sermon on the Mount Part 6

55 – Sermon on the Mount Part 6; Matthew 7:7-27, Luke 6:31, 43-49

Matthew 7:7 “[a]Ask, and it will be given to you; [b]seek, and you will find; [c]knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you [d]who, when his son asks for a loaf, [e]will give him a stone? 10 Or [f]if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

12 “In everything, therefore, [g]treat people the same way you want [h]them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

15 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will [i]know them by their fruits. [j]Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17 So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, you will [k]know them by their fruits.

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many [l]miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and [m]acts on them, [n]may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the [o]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not [p]act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, and the [q]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

Luke 6:31 [a]Treat others the same way you want [b]them to treat you.

43 For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, [c]on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. 44 For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 The good man out of the good [d]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from [e]that which fills his heart.

46 “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [f]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [g]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the [h]torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the [i]torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Commentary

And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).The greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. In these study passages this week, we are called to spend time in prayer to God, seeking His will and provision, but we also learn that the outward fruit of loving God is, in fact, loving your neighbor. If you do the will of God, that’s the path to eternity with Him, and the will of God is for you to treat others as you want to be treated, not judging or deceiving or withholding from them.

The Golden Rule, found in Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31, is an ideology that many have attributed to Buddha, Confucius, or even rabbis who came before Jesus. However, these pre-Messianic teachings, while similar, are only found “in the negative: “Don’t do to someone else what you wouldn’t want him to do to you.” No positive action is contemplated. Jesus, however, requires His believers to initiate helpful actions toward others” (Nelson KJV Bible Commentary pg. 1273).

This teaching not only has bearing on our actions, but also on how we exercise Biblical discernment. We will be able to identify false prophets by their fruit. How do they treat others? How do they demonstrate an understanding of and obedience to God’s will? What is the overflow of their hearts that proceeds from their lips and manifests in their actions? It is important to note here that Jesus again insists His followers obey the law. When He turns away those who think they have been acting on His behalf on Earth, He says, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”

Jesus further reiterates His point and encourages His audience to heed His message through several comparisons. The series of contrasts between two gifts, two paths, two trees, and two houses exemplify a common teaching technique in Jewish and Greco-Roman culture at the time (Nelson KJV Bible Commentary pg. 1189).

The gifts demonstrate the nature of God versus the nature of man. The gates represent the inward struggle of man against this sin nature. The gates “The order of the gate first and then the way suggests the gate is the entrance by faith in Christ into the way of the Christian life. It is interesting to recall that Christians were first called those of “the way” (cf. Acts 9:2; 19:9; 22:4; 24:14)… Christ Himself is both the gate and the way (cf. Jn 14:6), and God enables men to find that gate (cf. Jn 6:44)” (Nelson KJV Bible Commentary pg. 1189). The analogy of trees depicts evidence of whether we have found the narrow way or not, and the analogy of houses illuminates whether our lifestyle is firmly and permanently rooted.
